As part of this year’s Recovery Month, Rathbun Insurance President and Partner Laura Stoken joined [Michigan Recovery Friendly Workplace Program](https://recoveryfriendlymi.com/) Manager Nicki Gabel for an episode of [Michigan Reimagined](https://spotlightmediastudios.com/podcast/michigan-reimagined/) with host Chris Buck to talk about Rathbun Insurance’s journey to becoming an accredited Recovery Friendly Workplace. The conversation explored not only what it means to be a Recovery Friendly Workplace, but why this work matters to employers, employees, families, and communities across Michigan. For Rathbun Insurance, the “why” is simple: being there matters most. People do not leave the difficult parts of their lives at the door when they come to work. Substance use disorder and recovery affect people from every background, profession, and community. Employers have an opportunity to create environments where people are treated with dignity, stigma is reduced, and employees know where to turn when they or someone they love needs help. That philosophy aligns naturally with who we are at Rathbun Insurance and the culture we continue to build within our agency. Our journey to becoming a Recovery Friendly Workplace began with a commitment to learning and taking meaningful action. Through the Michigan Recovery Friendly Workplace initiative, led by the Michigan Public Health Institute, and with the support and expertise of [LifeBoat Addiction Recovery Services,](https://lifeboataddictionrecovery.org/) our team has gained tools and resources to better understand substance use disorder, recovery, stigma, and the role employers can play. That commitment goes beyond earning an accreditation. Rathbun Insurance has worked to incorporate recovery-friendly practices into our workplace culture and ensure our team has practical resources available when they matter most. Our entire staff is trained in CPR, First Aid, and Narcan administration, and Narcan and an AED are available onsite. For Laura, the mission also carries a deeply personal connection. As a person in long-term recovery, she understands firsthand the hope and possibility that exist in recovery and the difference support, connection, and opportunity can make in someone’s life. Sharing that perspective alongside Nicki offered an opportunity to encourage other Michigan employers to consider what becoming recovery friendly could look like within their own organizations. Becoming a Recovery Friendly Workplace does not mean employers are expected to become treatment providers or have all the answers. It means creating a culture that reduces stigma, connects people with appropriate resources, supports recovery, and recognizes that people in recovery can be tremendous employees, colleagues, leaders, and community members. We are incredibly grateful to Chris Buck and Michigan Reimagined for creating space for this conversation, to Nicki Gabel and the Michigan Recovery Friendly Workplace initiative for their leadership, and to LifeBoat Addiction Recovery Services for their continued partnership and support.
