Investing in Diverse Talent for a Stronger Region

Investing in Diverse Talent for a Stronger Region

Rathbun Insurance President, Laura Stoken, was proud to join the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce as a panelist in last week’s discussion on Hiring and Retaining Diverse Talent — an essential component of building a vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive future for our region.

The panel brought together an incredible group of leaders to discuss strategies for building a strong talent pipeline and creating the conditions for diverse talent to connect, grow, and thrive within our community. This was truly an inspiring series — and Laura left deeply energized by the honesty, vulnerability, and brilliance in the room.

“To need to be seen, to be heard, to be understood, is simply to be human.” — L.R. Knost

The panel explored the difference between mentorship and sponsorship — challenging each of us to not only advise and support, but also to advocate for talent. We were reminded that when organizations intentionally build systems that honor different lived experiences, we unlock stronger outcomes, stronger culture, and stronger possibility.

Laura shared practical approaches organizations can take to better see, hear, and appreciate others — while fellow panelist Candace Williams (LAFCU) offered powerful insight on building structures that make belonging repeatable, not accidental. Together, the conversation reinforced that inclusive practices should not be occasional, optional efforts — but strategic commitments that shape the way we recruit, promote, advance, and invest in people.

We are grateful to have been surrounded by so many leaders who care deeply about creating real pathways for future talent in Greater Lansing.
