All You Ever Wanted to Know About Insurance

You Let a Friend Drive the Boat. Are You Still Covered?

Picture this: You’re out on the lake, enjoying the sunshine and cool breeze. A friend offers to take the wheel while you grab a snack or check the engine. You hand over the helm without a second thought… then pause: If something happens, am I still covered even though I’m not the one driving?

It’s a question we hear often—and the answer might surprise you.

Coverage Usually Follows the Boat

In most cases, if your friend has permission to operate your boat, your insurance will still apply—even if you’re not the one behind the wheel. Much like auto insurance, boat coverage is tied to the owner and the vessel, not necessarily who’s steering it.

That said, if someone regularly drives your boat (like a spouse, parent, or teenage child), it’s a smart move to check with your Rathbun account manager. They’ll be able to talk through rather or not that person needs to be officially listed on your policy.

You’re Still Responsible

Just because you’re not driving doesn’t mean you’re off the hook. If your friend causes an accident or injury while operating your boat, you could still be held liable. That’s why it’s important to be cautious before handing over the keys.

Ask yourself:

  • Are they under the influence?

  • Do they know how to safely operate your boat?

  • Are they familiar with waterway rules and local regulations?

  • Do they understand no-wake zones, right-of-way laws, or speed limits?

Being selective about who drives helps minimize risk—and that’s key to protecting yourself, your passengers, and everyone else out on the water.

What’s Covered (And What’s Not)

Most standard boat insurance policies cover the boat itself, the motor, trailer, and standard equipment. Liability coverage is also typically included to protect you if someone is injured or property is damaged.

But don’t forget: things like docks, boat lifts, or specialized gear may not be included automatically. These might need to be added separately through an inland marine policy or your homeowners coverage.

Don’t Guess—Ask

Boating season should be relaxing, not filled with “what ifs.” If it’s been a while since you’ve reviewed your boat insurance—or if your boating habits have changed—this is the perfect time to check in with your Rathbun account manager. We’ll help make sure your coverage is seaworthy and ready for summer.
